My Story So Far…

Hi

I am Jaya Bhawnani Narayanan. I am vice president of my own company, NJY - CCI & IT, which deals with Cyber Crime Investigation and Information Technology. WHILE my passion and most favorite thing in the entire world is singing :)

Born in the Indian city of Vadodara (Baroda) @ Gujarat, I later moved to Nigeria @ West Africa and grew up there

I started singing as a hobby @ the age of 12 and recorded a few songs WITHOUT any background music. I never dared to let anyone hear them as I was very shy about it and anyway, I was just doing it for fun

Then one day, many years later when I was 17, my mother heard me sing and she pushed me to perform on stage. From then onwards started my on-stage singing stints

My first stage performance was @ Abuja @ Nigeria. I sang the song “Khushiyaan Aur Gham” from the Bollywood Hindi movie “Mann”, WITHOUT the backing of any background music or karaoke. It was much appreciated by the audience and that was a big boost to me to continue singing. And from that day onwards, I never looked back

I continued to perform @ Nigeria @ various venues and for different occasions. I then re-located to Singapore, where I continued to perform on stage, both solo as well as duet

Further to that, I moved to India, got married and still continue to perform here today

I hope you all enjoy my renditions of both old and new classic songs, both Hindi and English @  www.youtube.com/jayabn and/or www.facebook.com/jayabn, and also leave your valuable comments :)

Thanks for watching and stay tuned for more

My Auditions So Far…

2001 – Singapore

  • A 4-round audition - English song round, Own Language song round, Dance round, Interview round

For the English song round, I sang the song "Truly Madly Deeply" by the artiste "Savage Garden"

For the Own Language song round, I sang the song "Taal Se Taal" from the Bollywood Hindi movie "Taal"

For the Dance round, my group was given a bunch of steps by the dance instructor, and I managed to get all the steps, which was quite tough. This is because the dance instructor was teaching us as though we were professional dancers

And for the Interview round, it was a kind of Q&A session where I was asked about myself, and to re-sing both my English / Hindi songs, and to demonstrate the dance steps that I had been taught
2004 – Singapore
  • Channel [V] Star Search – the debut programme to launch the channel, judged by Palash Sen from the band Euphoria and a Singaporean/Tamil musical personality Murali Krishnan, and hosted by Gaurav Kapur

For the first round, I sang the song “Chalo Tumko Lekar Chalein” from the Bollywood Hindi movie “Jism”. Murali Krishnan commented that “I did not understand a word of what you just sang, but it was simply awesome”, while Palash Sen did not comment at all. Anyway, I got through to the next round

For the second round, I sang the song “Pyar Huwa Chupke Se” from the Bollywood Hindi movie “1942 – A Love Story”. This was also well appreciated by both judges and hence, I got through to the next round and made it to top 7

For the third round, I was given a stack of papers with a choice of songs with lyrics. So, I chose to sing “Kal Ho Na Ho (Title Song)” from the Bollywood Hindi movie “Kal Ho Na Ho”. The judges did not comment on this. But I did not make it through to the next round :”(
2004 – Singapore
  • Singapore Idol season 1

I sang the song "Falling" by the artiste "Alicia Keys". But I did not make it to the second round :”(
2006 February – Singapore
  • Singapore Idol season 2

This time, I sang the song "I Turn To You" by the artiste “Christina Aguilera". But here also, I did not make it to the second sound :”(
2006 & 2007 – Singapore
  • I went for numerous other auditions that I cannot recall
2007 – Singapore
  • Live The Dream

I was required to come prepared with two songs. So, I sang the songs “I Will Always Love You” by the artiste “Whitney Houston” and “My Heart Goes Sha La La” by the artiste “Vengaboys”. The lady who conducted my audition noticed on my registration form that I had mentioned that I also sing in Hindi. So, she asked me if I had come prepared with any Hindi song. So, I sag the song “It’s The Time To Disco” from the Bollywood Hindi movie “Kal Ho Na Ho”. The lady was very impressed and I got through to the next round, which was the judges round. Here, I met the judges - Ken Lim, Dick Lee and a lady (I do not know her name). I sang the song “I Will Always Love You” by the artiste “Whitney Houston”. As soon as I started to sing the first line of the song, I noticed Ken Lim nod his head in approval; although none of them commented anything. Fast forward to the results - I did not get through to the next round :”(
2008 April – Mumbai, Maharashtra, India
  • Indian Idol Season 4

I sang the songs “Chalo Tumko Lekar Chalein” from the Bollywood Hindi movie “Jism” and “It’s The Time To Disco” from the Bollywood Hindi movie “Kal Ho Na Ho”. The lady who conducted my audition was very impressed and hence, I got through to the next round. I would just like to let you all know that I am the ONLY person who got through to the second round, from my batch of 10 people. :) That was just a really awesome feeling.

For my second round, I sang the song “Chori Chori Chupke Chupke” from the Bollywood Hindi movie “Krrish”. A different judge this time, asked if I had had any formal training in music, to which I replied in the negative. I think this was what he felt that I lacked. Because after this, he asked me to sing some “raagas” which, needless to say, I was not able to. :”( Soon after, I was informed that I did not make it to the third round. :) But still, I felt for having come got to the second round.
I hoped that these would all act as stepping stones for me to become a better singer day by day. But it so happened that at every audition, I was NEVER told what I had done incorrectly to NOT get chosen to the later round. But all this is NOT going ro deter me from my goal and ultimate destination. My dream is still very much alive in me… and soon, I will be bringing it to reality… my journey will never end until and unless I fulfil my dreams…

In A Little While, I Will Be Doing This –

  • I will be recording my own albums and singles
  • I will be performing solo in front of a full-house live audience
  • I will be singing playback for movies, with all my dream singers. I will not mention any names, as I find new and awesome singers everyday
  • And last but DEFINITELY not the least, I visualize myself receiving the “Best Singer of the Year/Decade” award
